Reply to Wild Cherry

This is a reply to one of the comments on my last entry. Since replying in the same forum that I received it in doesn't give me any points... I'm going to write a reply in here instead. (If all blogs were written by point whoring college students it's be a whole different ball game I think).

So in a comment Wild Cherry wrote:

I am wondering about the fantasy nature of "the nostalgic." this blogger seems to prolong some image about japan, which may or may not still reflect reality.

Interesting comment because I never really explored the idea that the 'nostalgic' personality was holding on to ideas that were even previously true. I was more focused on the idea that in the process of returning to France, they were choosing which memories to preserve, and that those memories were mostly positive/ overly positive. Maybe because 1) They are often too brief in their commentary 2) perhaps the internet forum prevents any sort of generation gap between the 20 - 30 something blogger and the guy / girl who was their 20 years ago.

Here's a couple rough translations of comments made by the 'nostalgics':

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm [exact number of mmm's] my mouth is watering just from looking at your photos!!Oh lala, just remembering the first time I had the pleasure of eating one (Okonyomiyaki)!!
I'm dying to go back to japan, and the it's the first thing I'll eat!

I look at your photos of TOKYO and I miss JAPAN more and more.

"you never know, it could be useful" [taken from entry in blog] If only you knew to what point your site can be more than just useful (vital even...) for someone like me, in Paris, who is constantly missing Japan. It's a true breath of air and a visual pleasure of rare quality.
Thank you very much,
Catherine

The Third person of course is representative of those who almost need the blogs about Japan in order to keep going. They are likely going though reverse culture chock and having a hard time of it.

Wild Cherry - you also basically picked up on the idea of another one of my chapters in your commentary. You / she said ...

maybe that even gets into photographic or journalistic truth, the idea that because something is published in a blog, it must be true. maybe that is why "the nostalgic" needs the blog so much, to be validated by the "official" blog publications.

In the another chapter of my thesis I'm trying to place travel blogs within the context of more 'legitimized' forms of travel writing. Since there is no publication process in blogging and there is no way to prove that the experiences of the 'traveler' are true, I imagine there would be a tendency to not consider these legitimate forms of travel writing. However, Travel blog are being used for the same purposes that other travel narratives are used for.

Some people who read blogs actually ask for recommendations on where to go during their vacation - thus showing that the travel blog can be used like a tour guide. The French version of the lonely planet website even has a link to a pdf download-able tour guide called "Voyages in the Blogosphere," in which the 'best' travel blogs are listed numerically and then by country in the glossary.

Websites dedicated to travel blogs take a somewhat similar approach, often only allowing the travel blogs of the best quality to be hosted on their main page etc. A few of the longer standing bloggers I'm looking at have even been asked to do podcasts on their experiences by outside companies. There's one example of a blogger - Matt from the blog "where the hell is matt"
who was hosted on VH1 as one of the top 40 internet superstars, and who received funding to basically travel around the world and keep doing what he was doing already.

So true or not, legitimate or not, the travel blog certainly inspires interest in those whom are reading them.

Long again,
Next time I'll tell you more about why grapefruits rock or something.

Ps. Does anyone else feel pressure writing these blogs now knowing that other people in class know us best through what we're writing? no just me? ~____~ - ironic smiley face? =D

Look at it this way. We're always going to be judging you, but this time you have control over the material with which we do so. ;)

haha! i just saw your post right now. i almost missed a post addressed specifically to me! how often does that happen? thanks for the explanation. i think i was considering your thesis in an existential, philosophical sense, moreso than in the documentary, ethnographic sense in which you seem to mean it. thanks for clarifying. it must be some really fun research. and even though we do talk more here than in the classroom, i still associate your physical entity with the words here. we should mention this blogging conversation when we physically see each other to disspell some of the weirdness and break that F2F-virtual disconnect. later!
